ALBUM CUT: During the late 1980's and early 1990's, the 7" 45 RPM vinyl
record became obsolete for consumer purchases. Only promotional 7" vinyl records
were made for radio stations that were still in the process of transferring from
vinyl to laser disc formats. At first, record companies began to market cassette
singles, but for most Latin artists, certain songs from an album were designated
to be played on the radio to promote the album release with no cassette single
release. As a result, songs began to appear on the "singles" music charts
and were given the title "ALBUM CUT" to indicate that no vinyl or cassette
single had been released, but that it was one of the songs chosen to promote
the album release. These songs were usually featured in compilation packages
that featured various artists.
CD singles began to appear in the early 1990's, but were
usually designated for dance-oriented artists in order to provide several mixes
of the song being promoted. Only DJ copies of a CD single were created for
artist like Ms. Carr. The common practice now for most major labels is to
provide DJs with either a CD single that features different songs by
different artists, or to provide one song by one artist with a variety of
mixes and remixes.
